How long will a pair of Ons usually last?
The durability of a running shoe depends on many factors, including the wearer. Your weight and your running action will have a major influence on how long your Ons will last, as will the types of surface you choose to run on. Generally speaking, with the exception of the Cloudracer competition model, a pair of Ons should last for between 600 and 1,200 kilometres. Any conventional running shoe still being worn after comparable use will have long lost any impact cushioning that was originally provided by its midsole, so is actually being worn for too long. With Ons, by contrast, the wear and tear are far easier to see, enabling them to be replaced at the right time.
What model of Ons is right for me?
We offer models to suit every type of runner, from hobby joggers to regular competitors, and from lengthy endurance sessions to out-and-out races. If you’re unsure what type of On is right for you, take advantage of our ’Model selector’, which you can access here.
I have overpronation/oversupination. Are Ons still good for me?
Every runner has their own biomechanical constitution. Our unique CloudTec® cushioning system adapts to each runner’s individual style, activating the muscles and stabilizing the ankles to make the control of your overpronation/oversupination part of your natural running movement. So yes: Ons are just the right running shoes for you, whether you have overpronated or oversupinated feet.
I have always worn supporting running shoes in view of my overpronation. If Ons don’t have such support, are they really right for me?
A certain amount of pronation is part of any normal running motion. It helps to cushion the forces felt when the heel touches down, easing the pressure on the rest of the locomotor system. With insufficiently strong muscles or weak connective tissues, however, a runner may develop overpronation over the years. But this can be corrected by building up the muscles concerned. And with their adaptive cushioning technology, Ons can actually help the wearer to build up these muscles in an effective and sustainable way.
Are Ons suitable for any kind of gait: normal, bow-legged or knock-kneed?
With their CloudTec® technology, your Ons will adapt to your particular running action, regardless of whether you are slightly bow-legged or knock-kneed. If the condition is more extreme, however, you may be well advised to take additional strength training to work on your gait.
Up to what kind of body weight can Ons be worn?
The heavier the runner, the lower the benefit from the cushioning effects that running shoes provide. With their advanced CloudTec® technology, however, Ons offer running comfort and soft landings for larger wearers, too. For runners with a heavier ground impact, the Cloudrunner is especially suitable, being designed as an endurance shoe with stronger ’Cloud’ elements. In the end, though, it should be the simple running sensation that determines your choice of shoe.
What kind of terrain and weather conditions can Ons be used in?
Ons comes from Switzerland, which is well known for its sometimes harsh climate and its challenging terrain. With their diamond-patterned anti-slip tread, the On’s cushioning elements grip onto the surface, making Ons ideal even for wet roads and slippery paths. The arrangement and the dynamic shape of the cushioning elements also provide additional traction on unsurfaced tracks, in any weather and at any time of the year.
I wear orthopedic insoles in my current running shoes. Should I stop doing so with the On, if it’s supposed to simulate running barefoot?
With their CloudTec® technology, your Ons will automatically adjust to distribute the pressure when you make impact with the ground, so you shouldn’t need to wear insoles, too. It’s also a good idea to at least try your Ons without insoles at first, not just because these can compromise your running comfort but also because too much support can have an adverse effect on your running action. You should then decide for yourself whether you prefer to use the insoles or not.
Are Ons only for runners with ’normal’ feet, or can they be worn by people with flat feet, fallen arches, hollow feet or splay feet, too?
Traditional advice on what running shoes to wear tends to classify people into static ’foot types’. As a result, many runners end up being advised to wear very stable shoes. At On, by contrast, we look at your entire running motion with all its various demands. The key point here is to enable you to activate or deactivate the right muscles at the right moment in the cycle. And that’s what our unique CloudTec® system enables you to do, regardless of whether you have flat feet, hollow feet or whatever.
Can Ons be worn not just for running but for walking or hiking as well?
We developed the On with its special CloudTec® system specifically for running purposes. But, as experience as shown, Ons are just as good to wear for similar sporting activities, such as walking, hiking or trail running, too.
