Q&A with Andy Vernon

How did you start running? When I was 14, I entered a local fun run, won it, and after the race the local running club who organised the race asked if I wanted to join. I did and it went from there.

Why do you run now? Running is my livelihood, it’s how I earn a living, I’m fairly good and I enjoy it.

What was the most important race you’ve run to date? I won the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford University in 2015 and ran the Olympic qualifying time for Rio 2016 so this race got me to the Olympics.

What is your pre-race ritual? I don’t really have a ritual because its hard to emulate something for every race, but I do the same warm up routine for pretty much every race.

What is your go-to training meal? I have porridge with a cup of tea before my training sessions

How do you recover after a tough run? Eat well, hydrate, stretch and sometimes nap.

What song is your go-to for the run? I listen to all sorts of music while out running.

Who is your “team”? Me and I have a lady who gives me sports massage once a week from Physio and Therapy, Teddington.

Apart from endurance sports, what is your passion? I love Formula 1 and property development.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a professional athlete? I would probably be mixing a bit of coaching with property development.

What does no one tell you about being a professional athlete? How lonely it can be at times.

What was the best piece of running advice you ever received? Don’t mess up.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Be patient, train smart and get a good coach.

Why On? I love the brand, On is fresh, innovative and the kit and trainers look smart. The company have good morals and principals and I like being part of that.

What’s your favorite item of On apparel and why? I like the tracksuit bottoms. They are comfortable, good fitting and again, look great.
