“Just how sustainable is this running shoe, exactly?” It’s a good question and one we’re excited to share the answer to. We’re all about data-driven research when it comes to sustainability, so we’ve been calculating.
To go about measuring the environmental footprint of the Cloudneo running shoe, we conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) comparing it to the average On shoe. An LCA looks at everything from how the material is sewn, to water usage in production, to the trip made by our customers to make an in-store purchase. We broke down every inch of what it takes to engineer the average On shoe and all the processes associated with it.
But wait, this shoe that hasn’t launched yet let alone begun its lifecycle. The numbers are preliminary since the design is still being finalized but using the current model, we made it our mission to collect the most realistic and accurate data possible and followed the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Here’s how it measured up
1. From production to first round of recycling, the Cloudneo running shoe produces 50% less CO2.
2. It takes a lot of energy to power factories – in total, we reduce energy consumption by 70%.
3. The Cloudneo running shoe also produces a massive 90% less waste in total, and zero waste once it’s in your hands.
So, how is it possible?
We turn the typical linear lifecycle of a product into a continuous loop. Instead of your shoes ending up as waste, we take them back and recycle 100% of the materials. Each loop means another pair of shoes we don’t need to make from scratch, and another pair spared from the trash.
Reduce, reduce, reduce.
The Cloudneo running shoe from Cyclon is engineered from just two materials from the same material family – that’s the trick to make it possible to recycle all of it together. It’s more than 50% bio-based overall, with the shoe’s upper being 100% au naturale (no fossil fuel derived plastics in this upper!). No dye. No bleaches. No demand for harmful coloring process.
By using modern (and very clever) technologies, we remove the need to use harmful chemicals and gases in the production stage. The entire Cloudneo running shoe has less than 10 components from one material family (typically running shoes have more than 60 components from several material families). This means a simpler, less demanding engineering process.
These calculations are accurate to date but we’re still making final tweaks and minor changes to get this piece of the future ready for launch. These statistics might change slightly – but we’ll keep you in the loop.
