As an era ends for Roger Federer, another begins

The Swiss maestro is retiring from professional competition – but his work as a member of the On team is only just taking off.

It didn’t take long for the news to spread around the On offices. It started with a wave of whispers, a few gasps of disbelief, and then the growing rumble of conversation turned into shouts: Roger Federer is retiring from competitive pro tennis.

For us, like for so many sports fans around the world, the news was bittersweet. While it’s sad to think we won’t see one of the greatest athletes of all time compete in the way we have become so used to, there’s gratitude and celebration, too. Discussions quickly turned to all the incredible moments of Roger magic we can look back on. And everything we can look forward to.

At On, we’re grateful to be part of Roger’s next chapter. Without the demands of pro competition on his schedule, we’re excited for even closer collaboration with our best-known team member.

Roger has been part of the On team since 2019. From the beginning, it’s been a different type of brand-athlete relationship: Roger joined as an entrepreneur to help shape the On brand – and the future of sports. We announced his arrival with a team run through New York and his work with us has been moving at pace ever since.

Roger was already working closely with the team in the On Lab at that point, providing his unique experience to help develop the first On tennis competition shoe, THE ROGER Pro. As part of the ultimate testing process, Roger competed in the shoe in the final matches of his pro career.

The collaboration on THE ROGER Pro also inspired us to revolutionize the classic tennis-inspired all-day sneaker. Since launching in 2020, THE ROGER collection has combined a timeless silhouette in fresh colorways with the comfort and agility of our CloudTec® technology.

Like all On performance products, THE ROGER is constantly being questioned and re-engineered to push new boundaries. The latest addition to the franchise, THE ROGER Clubhouse Mid, brings the Swiss-engineered benefits to a 90’s-inspired mid-top.

There have been some special releases too, like a collaboration with KITH, and the latest limited edition for the 2022 Laver Cup. And there are plenty of innovations in the pipeline.

“It’s already been a great journey with On, and I’m looking forward to dedicating more time to projects in the Lab,” says Roger.

“As a tennis player, I loved working closely with my team, so it’s great to keep that team spirit going at On. It was clear from the beginning that everyone at On shares my passion for performance. It’ll be fun to continue going deep into product development, adding my experience during the process, and learning from the team as well.

“With THE ROGER Pro we have our first competitive tennis shoe, but there’s lots more we can do in the tennis space. We have some very cool things coming that I can’t wait to show people.”

So watch this space. And, from all of us, a big thanks for everything Roger –  for the inspiration from the past 24 years on the court. And for all that’s still to come. We can’t wait to get started on the next chapter.
