´The Captain´ wins Ironman 70.3 Buffalo City

South African Team On triathlete Matt Trautman takes victory on home soil for the fourth time.

Before becoming a pro athlete in 2012, Matt Trautman thought to himself: “I know how to run, swim and ride a bike” – well indeed you do, Captain.

More specifically, the 34-year-old Ironman champion from South Africa can swim 1.2 miles (1.9 km), ride 56 miles (90 km) and run 13.1 miles (21.1 km) consecutively in a time of 04:02:59, snatching him his fourth Ironman 70.3 title on home turf this past weekend.

Matt was competing against top athletes, including Olympic bronze medalist Henri Schoeman, making it a tactical race. After coming out of the water in fifth place, Matt used the run to secure his winning gap. Speaking after the race, Matt stated:

It was good for me to get a bit of gap during the run. My plan was to quickly get into my own rhythm and I managed to lead in the last 40 minutes of the bike.

Matt will go on to compete at the Ironman 70.3 Dubai 2020, before taking on the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Port Elizabeth, South Africa at the end of March.
