“Our challenge with the third generation Cloudventure was to make an even better performance trail running shoe,” says Oliver Whitworth, Footwear Developer on the Cloudventure. “We wanted to create a shoe that delivered flexibility and freedom, a ride that kept runners connected to the ground underfoot but also provided enough cushioned comfort and support for the longer miles.”

Fit for anything

We’ve transformed the uppers to offer even better protection in all conditions while keeping On’s trademark lightweight, breathable, comfortable long-lasting fit. We’ve replaced the double layer engineered mesh with two laminated materials that appear almost fused into a single upper layer that wraps the foot with a snug, protective and durable barrier against sand, dirt – and whatever else the trail chucks in your path.

“Rather than use the air mesh like previous generations, we closed the upper material to create something more like a Ripstop. It gives you all-over protection and helps prevent tears and punctures to the upper,” says Oliver.

We’ve boosted the lockdown foothold by adding unique, flexible wings to the tongue. These wrap the midfoot, holding it in place to add support and protection against unwanted foot movement and slippage inside the shoe.

On the outside, we’ve also added 360° lightweight TPU reinforcements as a buffer against knocks and bumps from rocks, roots and trail debris.

Lace for impact

We’re big on clever little design details that make a big difference. That’s why we paid close attention to the laces. “We worked to make the Cloudventure’s lacing happen exactly where the flex point is, right at your metatarsal phalangeal joint,” says Oliver.  “So, the lacing would be in line with how your foot flexes at this point, to cause less kind of pressure and really support you in that area.” We also incorporated a lace strap to lock away laces, safe and secure.

The joy of flex

To make the new Cloudventure perform better than ever, we’ve paid close attention to the midsole. For the first time, the re-engineered Cloudventure bottom unit combines lightweight, responsive Helion™ superfoam with an updated CloudTec® geometry and a uniquely-shaped Speedboard®, in a trail mix that’s even more potent.

Based on athlete feedback and inspired by the Cloudventure Peak, the re-engineered Slingshot Speedboard® has a completely new forefoot shape. The new two-finger design splits in the forefoot, following the big toe. This helps maintain flexion during push off, increasing the torsion ability and keeping On’s typical natural rolling motion.

“We kept the flexion for good push off propulsion but really narrowed the Speedboard® in the shank to allow it to be more flexible and offer good torsion,” says Oliver. “Reducing the Speedboard® midsection allows for even better feedback from the ground, by keeping you feeling connected to the terrain at all times.”

Soft power

From a fast off-road 10km to a trail marathon, we wanted the Cloudventure to keep feet feeling fresh, so you can conquer it all. So we updated the geometry and thickness of the Clouds in the heel, allowing more space for compression, softening landings and maintaining comfort over much longer distances.

The combination of a softer heel construction and a new slingshot Speedboard® creates a sensational ride that balances comfort, support and flexibility. Giving you the freedom and confidence to run far, while staying perfectly in touch with the terrain.

Sticks and stones

Whether you encounter technical trails, steep muddy climbs or slippy stoney descents, the Cloudventure guarantees unflinching grip on your run. Thanks to our improved "sticky" Missiongrip™ rubber on the outsole – and tweaked traction pattern – that provides our best grip yet on varied terrain. 

We also added higher-grip studs in the forefoot for good traction and strong push off, even in softer terrain. Throughout the rest of the outsole, we combined flat profile blocks to increase ground contact and deliver high traction on dry surfaces. While our trademark 3D-shaped triangle texture maintains that reliability even when the trails get wet.

Finally, we created a closed-channel CloudTec® design to prevent stone catching.
