From revolution to evolution: Introducing the all-new Cloudsurfer 6

From humble beginnings with pieces of garden hose to redefining the sensation for runners around the world. The all-new Cloudsurfer not only amps up the ultimate ride with this newest iteration, it also gets a new name. Meet the Cloudsurfer 6.

In many ways, the story of the Cloudsurfer 6 is the story of On. If you’ve stepped into an On shoe, you know that running on clouds is a ride that’s unique.  Think soft landings followed by explosive take-offs. And the original Cloudsurfer is the shoe that started it all.

Back in 2010, former world duathlon champion and multiple Ironman triathlon winner Olivier Bernhard was seeking a new running sensation. He wanted the best of all worlds – reduced impact on striking the ground, but a hard, speedy push off for kicking past that final competitor at the finish line.

From garden shed to global

Unable to find a shoe that delivered the ride he wanted, Olivier began building his own. He partnered up with a like-minded Swiss engineer, cut up pieces of a garden hose and glued them onto a traditional racing flat. He didn’t know it then, but the first Cloudsurfer prototype was born.

Olivier was convinced that this was how running should feel. Those that tried it agreed. The shoe soon evolved from a simple homemade construction to a Swiss-engineered performance model. The Cloudsurfer had arrived. And so had On.

“The Cloudsurfer is what initially put us on the map,” says Olivier, now On Co-Founder and Head of R&D. “People thought it was gimmicky at first, but soon realized it was a truly unique technology and sensation – something the running industry was missing.”

"Ten years later, the shoe still sells and people all around the world write to us saying how much they love it.”

The signature ride re-engineered

Now in its sixth generation, the Cloudsurfer 6 continues to evolve while remaining true to the same central principles it was created with – high comfort and high speed. As always, all the essential characteristics of the shoe known for a playful ride when running on the road are there, including a focus on the heel-to-forefoot transition that actively encourages you to accelerate.

This latest iteration of the all-new Cloudsurfer 6 amps up the ultimate ride with extra EVA cushioning, re-engineered mesh layers and a wraparound tongue to give improved comfort and a completely unique ride sensation.

Softer landings

The extra layer of EVA cushioning means the new Cloudsurfer 6 takes the impact out of road running like never before. An added layer of EVA foam at the heel softens the foot strike on hard surfaces so even long runs on asphalt feel easy. Together with the arc of the Speedboard®, this added wedge of cushioning raises the heel for a constant feeling of forward motion.  As one tester put it, “it’s like running downhill all the time.”

More explosive take-offs

Just as master surfboard shapers craft their boards, the On engineers have shaped and reshaped the Cloudsurfer 6’s Speedboard® for the ultimate explosive take-off. You can see this thin plate of stiff high-performance elastomer along the side of the shoe just under the midsole. It fires like a longbow at every step, converting the energy of impact into forward motion.

While the Speedboard® has been tuned for bigger take-offs, the Rebound Rubber Clouds work together with the rest of the midsole trio to deliver even more responsive and powerful push offs with every step – helpful when you’re pushing the pace.

Higher comfort at high speed

Take a close look at the upper of the Cloudsurfer 6 and you’ll see a new wraparound tongue integrated into the engineered mesh ready to take your comfort to the next level. Designed to fit like a glove, the tongue folds over the medial side of your instep to elevate the step-in comfort and ensure a snug foothold with pressure-free lacing that gives a cosy and protected fit.

The engineered mesh is 80% recycled and divided into distinct zones, bringing breathability and targeted support. The pattern of the mesh has been developed with a functional gradient with the anatomy of the foot, and comfort, in mind. Mesh with a wider weave over the forefoot offers breathability and mobility, while the banded sections are woven tighter to keep the metatarsal area and midfoot in place as you run. And the Cloudsurfer 6’s improved comfort continues with a re-engineered Zero-Gravity midsole that contains an integrated heel counter which cradles the foot to give excellent hold and support throughout your session.

Enjoy the ride

For runners around the world who already consider the Cloudsurfer their go-to shoe, the next-gen Cloudsurfer 6 offers more comfort, more speed and more fun for your run. If you’re new to On, it offers the ultimate introduction to running on clouds. Either way, your first run in the all-new Cloudsurfer 6 will be a ride you won’t forget.
