On athletes are celebrating a famous weekend after Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu, Max Studer and Tadesse Abraham claimed the top three finishes in the men’s Swiss Athletics Championships 10km and Nicola Spirig took silver in the women’s event.
Refugee athlete Lokinyomo Lobalu stormed to the finish line in a new PR of 28:32, 19 seconds ahead of Studer’s 28:51 and 34 seconds ahead of Abraham (29:06) – only to later admit he had been carrying a knee injury!
Lokinyomo Lobalu said: “The first 5km was too slow for me. The other guys were pushing in front, but I felt really comfortable so I decided to push myself into the last 5km and lead the race. I was confident."
My next race is on Saturday in Geneva, where I’ll be competing in the 1,500m with some fast British athletes. I hope my knee feels better by then!
The result means Studer, who finished second in a Triathlon World Cup event in Lisbon two weeks ago, heads into the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as Swiss champion – an ideal confidence boost with less than nine weeks to go until the Games begin.
