One thing you quickly notice while talking to this friendly superman is that he loves what he does. Triathlon is his passion: the people, the scenery, the finisher buffet that waits beyond the line. In 2008, Andreas competed in his first triathlon. By 2012 he had already turned pro and in 2016, claimed the title of Ironman 70.3 European Champion.
How did you start running? At school with the 1000m track races.
Why do you run now? To be free and feel free amongst nature
What has been the most important race you’ve run to date? The 2016 70.3 European Championship in Wiesbaden - when hard work in the Swiss mountains paid off (and where I became European Champion).
What is your pre-race ritual? Carbo-loading ;)
What do you think about while running? Nothing! My mind’s clear and focused.
What song is your go to for the run? Macklemore – Ten Thousand Hours.
Who is your “team”? My Coach Rainer. My girlfriend Isabel. My family. My agent Zibi. My bike-fitter Jürgen. My swim and tri club SV Bayreuth. My Team Erdinger Alkoholfrei.
Who would you be if you weren’t a professional athlete? Well, I´m one of the lucky ones that finds that there’s always an opportunity somewhere waiting.
What does no one tell you about being a professional athlete?
It´s just sport at the end of the day: there are more important things in life.
What was the best piece of running advice you ever received? Run easy when it is supposed to be easy.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Begin with small steps - and then extend step by step.
Why On? Running on clouds is an amazing feeling – I don´t want to miss it.
