Born in South Africa, Kyle starting running and cycling at 24. A year later he competed in his first triathlon gaining early success. Since his late start, he has gone on to be two-time Ironman World Champion in his age-group and has qualified 7 times for the World Championships in Kona.
How did you start running? In 2008 I joined a friend who was training for an Ironman as I was bored and he needed the company.
Why do you run now? To improve and make gains on becoming the best athlete I can be.
What has been the most important race you’ve run to date? I think that must have been my first full Ironman as a pro in 2014 as I had to prove myself, and I did.
What is your pre-race ritual? I don’t really have a ritual. There are a lot of things that need to be done before the race so I just try to stay calm in all the chaos and get them done!
What is your go to training meal? It’s not a meal but more of a snack that I look forward to before my run. I have a chocolate or pecan-nut muffin with a coffee, which is my absolute favourite!
What song is your go to for the run? Armin van Buuran: Behind the Story
What is your passion next to endurance sports? I love to surf. It was my passion before triathlon which has had to take a backseat for now.
Who would you be if you weren’t a professional athlete? I guess pro-surfer is also an athlete so then I would still be an electrician working 9-5 if it was not for triathlon.
What does no one tell you about being a professional athlete?
That the travelling can be pretty hectic. No one ever tells you that you will end up packing everything you need plus the kitchen sink.
What was the best piece of running advice you ever received? Pace yourself very well at the beginning of the run, then stay controlled.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Listen to your coach, train when you are training and race when you are racing…and don’t half wheel!
Why On? I love the passion that this company has to continually grow. The amazing colour combinations and the technology behind the shoe is inspiring.
