Ben Allen grew up by the sea in Australia, and had already won numerous medals for open- water surf swimming and surf lifesaving by his teenage years. At the age of 20 he was selected for the Australian national triathlon team, then ITU, and more recently, top of the Xterra podiums.
How did you start running? As a means and a way to be fitter and healthier in everyday life.
Why do you run now? I love the feeling of being fit and healthy. Plus running allows me to express the adventurous spirit within myself.
What has been the most important race you’ve run to date? The race of life! Everyday I continue to fight and live life free and on the edge.
What is your pre-race ritual? I like to surround myself with family and friends, smile and embrace what I’m about to challenge myself up against.
What do you think about while running? Nothing! My mind is free and takes me wherever it wants to go. That’s the beauty of running, your completely free and one with nature.
What is your go to training meal? Warm oats with blueberries, walnuts, honey, cinnamon and dates.
What song is your go to for the run? Timmy Trumpet, “Freak Show”
Who is your “team”? My wife, Jacqui Slack, my family “Team ALLEN” and my sponsors!
What is your passion next to endurance sports? A waterman - I grew up by the beach and always feel at peace when I’m in the seawater either surfing or swimming.
Who would you be if you weren’t a professional athlete? The best Ben Allen I could be. I’m a PE-high school teacher in Australia, so most probably continue to be a good PE teacher.
What does no one tell you about being a professional athlete?
The amounts of washing you have to do each day!
What was the best piece of running advice you ever received? Be patience and learn to persist and never give up.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Allow yourself time to develop naturally and choose the path less travelled.
Why On? Because no one else understands the meaning of running better than On. The attention to detail, design and technology is what I embrace allowing me to run free and enjoy life the way I want to live it.
