French flyer Sandra Dodet is one of triathlon’s rising stars. She announced her arrival with bronze at the U23 World Championships in 2016. Now based in Boulder, Colorado, she is part of an international training group pushing each other to the limits of human performance.
Sandra – why triathlon, and how did you get started? I was a swimmer (400m, 800m, 1500m freestyle) until the age of 18. I discovered running through some cross-country races in high school. Then I was approached by the French triathlon federation. A few months later, I joined the national coach and some national triathletes to properly learn how to ride and run. That’s how it all started.
When you don’t feel like training, what inspires you to get out there? I remember that triathlon is my job and my passion, and how lucky I am to be able to live every day like this.
Can you tell us about a moment you’d like to relive? In 2018, at my first Mixed Team Relay race in Edmonton, Canada, I was the first of the French team to take the start and finished first in my relay. The race was so short, so intense and so stressful. I had a mix of emotions at the end of my race. I’d love to relive that feeling.
Do you have a special pre-race ritual? Four hours before the race, I’ll eat some rice, do my braids and check all my race stuff.
Is nutrition a big focus? What’s your go-to meal after a tough run? Nutrition is important. In training, I’m careful to always eat enough for what I have spent in calories. The aim is to avoid dietary deficiencies and recover in the most optimal way.
What are your top tips for a speedy recovery after training? Drink a protein shake immediately and spend 20 minutes at the end of the day in compression boots.
Who is your ‘team’? O’Brien Performance (formerly Origin Performance).
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received? Two stand out: “don’t miss out on something that could be great just because it might also be hard” and “whatever you are, be a good one”.
Apart from running, what are your passions? Photography, cinematography and any other visual art.
What’s your favorite On gear? The Cloudboom. You don’t run in it. You fly!
Finally, why On? On is a young, innovative and eco-conscious brand whose minimal style appealed to me a lot.
