Spanish athlete Vicente Hernández grew up playing football and swimming. At 18, he turned his attention to triathlon and never looked back. A fierce competitor, Vicente rose steadily through the ranks to represent his country at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Today, he competes in the World Triathlon Series and makes regular half distance outings too. Despite aquatic origins, Vicente has fallen in love with running and considers it to be his strongest triathlon discipline.
How did you start running? My main sport when I was younger was swimming. I only started to run as a way of trying to discover my potential within a group of young and talented triathletes. It was great - I felt really good and found a new passion for competing in triathlon.
Why do you run now? I run now because it makes me feel better, and it helps me to achieve my goals in triathlon. The feeling that you get when you are in good shape while running is totally addictive.
What was the most important race you’ve run to date? Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016
What is your pre-race ritual? I don’t have rituals. I just try to be relaxed and do my warm-up properly.
What do you think about while running? I love running with a blank mind, just focusing on where my feet land and taking in the landscapes. When I am racing, I try to send myself positive messages, and I concentrate on keeping my technique and running with proper form.
What is your go-to training meal? I don’t like to eat very near to my training but, if I have enough time before, I usually do a carbo-load.
How do you recover after a tough run? I do a stretching session, put my legs in an ice bath, and try to eat food high in protein and some carbohydrates.
What song is your go-to for the run? Any song by Biffy Clyro. At high volume.
Who is your “team”? My family, my girlfriend, my coach, my training mates, and my friends. All of them are a big part of my successful moments and give me huge support all the time.
Apart from endurance sports, what is your passion? I love surfing - although I really enjoy practicing any sport. I also love traveling, sport science, and the coaching world. I am happy because I feel I have a lot of interests in many different topics.
What was the best piece of running advice you ever received? Focus your attention on landing using your feet toes and your hip high and in retroversion.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Be patient and put in the hard work independently, and things will work out in races. If you do that, you are creating opportunities for yourself in the future.
